Archives and Special Collections at Santa Clara University are thrilled to announce that we have acquired two new Stainforth books (bib records forthcoming, they are being cataloged):
- Philips, Katherine. Poems by the Most Deservedly Admired Mrs. Katherine Philips, the Matchless Orinda. London: printed for Jacob Tonson, within Grays-Inn Gate next Grays-Inn Lane. 1710. *This is the first octavo edition of the authorized version of Philips’ poems.
- Cave, Jane. Poems on Various Subjects, Entertaining, Elegiac, and Religious. With a few select poems from other authors. By Miss Cave. Now Mrs. W—. Bristol: printed for the author. 1786.
Even more exciting, Katherine Phillip’s Poems includes a letter from John Stainforth to Alexander Gardyne, another book collector during the nineteenth century, as well as a note from Gardyne. There is very little known about Stainforth’s personal collection process from his correspondence, and these manuscripts will help us to further study his library and literary collecting during this time. It is hard to express just how delighted we were to find these letters, and we are eager to explore what it could mean for the future of this project.
